Is there anybody here here? I sure would love to play in a samba band on the playa. I know a little bit of samba, but I'm doing African drumming pretty regularly and could learn my part at home if necessary. Is anyone putting anything together?

Hey all,
Sorry for the all-caps header, but both me and another drumming friend of mine have been trying to track down the Loyd Family players from Oakland, Ca. for awhile now. I already sent them an email on myspace. Any website for them? Or does anyone know where they rehearse?
Thanks!

Looking for Samba (classes & dance community) in LA

Hi guys,

I moved here from NYC last September where I studied, taught, and performed Samba de Bahia, Rio, and Roda; Afoxe Ijexa, Iansa, Maculele, and all the yummy rhythmic traditions of Brazil. I miss it so, and am hoping to find classes and community here in the LA area. I live in the valley and own and run a business in Venice, CA. Hoping to find the "good medicine" near by.

Hello my lovely sambistas!

As some of you may know, I had knee surgery this January and still getting my ass back to climbing stairs at the present moment. For this reason, I am not planning on teaching Samba but that may change.

HOWEVER: Fallen Angel of The Havana Room has invited me to do a little performance on the playa....

REQUEST: 2 or 3 experienced samba dancers to team up with me on the playa for a short choreographed performance on the stage of the Havana Room...we'll put together costume idea, choose some music, get a few moves down.... NO STRESS, JUST FUN.

For more info: tribes.tribe.net/havanaroom/

Answer this thread and tell me if you're interested....

Hello all!
I'm new to this tribe, love samba, lived in Brazil, and will be experiencing Burning Man for the first time this year. Hey, I wanted to see if any of you make (or know artists who make) the beautiful fantasias (costumes). I'm looking at investing in one for the Burn, and I want it to be schnazzy! Any tips are received with much appreciation!

Samba do Sol will be doing samba drums on fire, plus breakbeat, reggae, samba mutado, and maracatu at Conclave thsi year. We'll probably also be roaming the playa looking for a good Brazilian percussion sesh!

Come and find us at area 2257 - we'll be there cranking the lugs on repiques and trying to keep the surdo heads from melting.

I've been told that the Lloyd family will be there, but they didn't respond to Samba do Sol's email!

Hi, I am new to the tribe. I have been involved for a while now
with a local samba school. We just had a performance
recently and it was a blast! I usually play surdo and was
wondering how to locate any camps planning to put on
performances that might need some help.

Clarification...

Hi Everybody,

While this tribe is relatively small, people are still able to surf around Tribe.net and check things out so I wanted to post a little info so there is no misunderstanding.

*I am doing this project out of my love for the dance and music of Brazil and want to share what I've learned. During the rest of the year I do not teach but rather take lots of classes.

I study with Maisa Duke and occasionally perform with her group, Energia do Samba (including this year's Carnaval in SF).

Some people might have thought that because of this, Maisa is in some way connected to Burning Man or my little pet project here.

Truth is, she has a very busy performance and teaching schedule and is NOT connected to the Burning Samba tribe.

For those of you familiar with Burning Man, this is all for free and volunteer so I would not attach any assumptions with a professional group in San Francisco.

OK... that said... On with the planning and I'll see you all out in the desert in a few weeks!

Don't you?
The moment I first saw those humungous feathery backpieces and shimmery costumes & headdresses in person, and met the people/heard the music, I thought "Wouldn't it be so great to take this stuff to Burning Man?"

Check out my huge white wings (in my photos) - you guessed it, they're Samba wings! They made their debut on the playa in 2003. Booyah!

Nice to meet you all!

seeking drum group in salvador

Hi everybody.
It is my dream to be part of a Samba drumming group. I am here in Salvador, Brazil now and would like to learn more. I live in the historical center and the other day walked by this group of guys dressed up in ridiculous costumes having the time of their lives just banging away... I was laughing with pure joy, there really is nothing like that sound, damn!
I have no experience as a drummer, but everybody I know has always questioned this; it's in my blood. Any suggestions? I don't need to be part of this year's carnival, I just want to find a group that would throw me a drum and be willing to grant me a small part in their thing. I love it!

Obrigado
jp

I must've run into you guys the night of the burn, I ran into SOMETHING special (tough to recall...I ran into a lot, heh). If this works out here I'd love to be part of that. OK thanks for the advice

But I'll tell everyone what I'm thinking of for next year:

Groove Camp were fantastic hosts!

I'm thinking next year I'll have a vinyl floor in my camp and have Samba Classes and Dance Sessions in the evenings or at night.

Its just too darn hot out there! And the dances at night will keep up warm and happy!

Update from the E-Playa

this message sent to me today from Waltsnipe (?):

All my Brazilian drummer friends are here in Austin and won't make the drive (grumble, grumble), but I thought you might want to know about this similar event we're staging on the playa this year:

Tues.: 8-10:45pm, Carnaval: Night in Brazil Dance. Held at SCARAB/Electra camp, and simulcast on Radio Electra. Free colorfully-labelled CDs of the night's music mix to the first 50 dancers.

I've always wished there was more world music on the playa, so starting in '02 I've sponsored an annual world music community dance on Tuesday nights. In '02, it was the Night at the Oasis Dance, which featured North African music as played in the expatriate nightclubs of Paris. Last year, it was the Night in Africa Dance, featuring great Sub-Saharan dance music from Africa. This year, I've got some Brazilian mixes that I think people will really like. Wear Carnaval attire (which can be pretty similar to playa attire as to very "abbreviated" costumes, I suppose), and dance with us under the stars.

If you do manage to get a samba drum corps together, I would love to hear it/see you marching across the playa. Talk about a serious conga line!

Hello Everyone!

I am driving up to our fair city of Black Rock on Friday afternoon (or Sat. morning) to get there early and assist with some groups...

When are you all arriving?

My camp co-ordinates are somewhere near 8:00 & Mars (or Jupiter)... look for the solar lights and purple & turquoise banner...

If you can't find me, I'll be at Groov Camp for sure ready to dance with all of you!
