Re: WoW! Introductions are in order...
Wed, June 8, 2005 - 1:40 PMEu sou Pingüim, e outros apelidos ...
that nickname as you can see is one of many, but the first you see is my original Capoeira nickname. Also I sometime go by "toque" on the playa, a lil' play on words (it's a ski hat in Canadian vernacular, or means "touch", "note" (ie at the strike of the note) or more accurately a certain rhythm pr beat in Portuguese, eg in Capoeira there are "toques do berimbau".
In my group (axecapoeira.com) or at least in the chapter in BC where I used to live, we also play a lot of Brazilian music, so I can play several styles (the usual sambao, samba de roda, samba duro, samba-reggae) incluando algos ritmos Nordestinos (Coco de Roda, Maracatu, Coco-Baiao, Afoxe). I play surdo, timbau, alfaia pandeiro (um poco, well besides Capoeira), can play caixa, repinique, agogo, xocalho, tamborim etc. And berimbau tho' I'm rusty on that one more than others.
I have couple issues: I'm not 100% sure I can make it to BMan, though I probably will. But more importantly, I don't HAVE any of these instrumentos to call my own.
That said, I may well be coordinating the daily Capoeira rodas in the Center Camp Cafe -- I took on the role last year in absence of any other volunteers -- and shold be easily found and somehwat connected to others with an interest in Burning Samba.
One crew from Santa Cruz always plays -- Suco -- and will try to contact them about a throwdown and maybe between now and August, I can buy something.
eg here is a good Western US/California/Bay Area supplier of Brazilian percussion instruments, though at present I can't afford anything:
espiritodrums.com
Oh, and I dunno where I'll camp yet. I may likely be on the playa a week or so early to volunteer again, if that helps this group any.
e' bastante agora!
Axé!

Re: WoW! Introductions are in order...
Thu, June 9, 2005 - 11:06 AMi looked for the capoeira in the cafe last year but came up empty! last time i really saw the roda was in 2001 everyday consistently. it was wonderful!
anyhoo - check out the new pics i found online of carnavals in brazil... no idea which year they were taken though.
i'll bring some cds like i did last year and if you find us with your drums all the better! its hard to plan for a batteria in the desert but it would make it all the better (and we could get mobile with it!) -

Re: WoW! Introductions are in order...
Thu, June 9, 2005 - 11:54 AMWhat do you guys think of 'Axé music'? Another brazilian rhythm. There are great Axé bands and singers, like 'Timbalada', 'Olodum', 'Daniela Mercury'...I'm just curious..
Tchau,
Mayra. -

Re: WoW! Introductions are in order...
Thu, June 9, 2005 - 12:05 PMwe danced to Timbalada last year! the music was like Pied Piper... at one point it seemed like over 80 people were dancing...

Re: WoW! Introductions are in order...
Wed, July 6, 2005 - 7:31 PMI love Axe music! All Brazilian music, but I think axe is my favorite.
to introduce myself: I'm Juniper, been going to Burning Man since '98 and I used to dance Samba in a dinner theater in Osaka Japan (about 5 years ago), as well as for festivals and parades. Now I do other kinds of dance performance (mostly with Mutaytor of Burning Man), and I TOTALLY incorporate the samba style, costuming, etc. in whatever I do, wherever I go because it just SINGS to me!
Still listen to lots of Brazilian music, mostly Daniela Mercury - she does samba, axe, etc. I LOVE her to death, hoping to see her in concert someday.

Re: WoW! Introductions are in order...
Thu, June 9, 2005 - 1:35 PMFYI: Capoeira was at 4p.m. daily (Brazilian/playa time) in the Cafe. I was also there in 2001, I had purple hair and was often playing with Samurai, who hopefully can return to BMan this year -- he's Japanese and had a black ponytail at the time, if you recall.
Capoeira will likely be in the same time and place this year.
Viva Timbalada!
"Vou na timbalada, o ia,
canto pro mar, mar, mar, mar, mar, mar
Vou na timbalada, o ia,
canto pro ar, ar, ar, ar, ar, ar
Eu canto pra lua, porque eu amo a lua,
ai que lua, ai que lua, ai que lua, ai que lua
Eu canto pra terra, porque eu amo a terra,
ai que terra, ai que terra, ai que terra, ai que terra
Eu canto pra ela porque eu amo a ela,
ai que ela, ai que ela, ai que ela, ai que ela ..."
- Canto Pro Mar (from (self-titled) "Timbalada", 1990?) -

Thu, June 9, 2005 - 2:44 PMhe came in 2003, but not last year. I have been meaning to get in touch. Dunno how much samba he plays, or Capoeira for that matter, these days. But his fire spinning is likely top-notch. I'll email him when I can.
I'm acutally going to Israel from June 14 - July 27 ...
Enough of my ramblin' --

Re: WoW! Introductions are in order...
Fri, July 8, 2005 - 11:51 PMHey y'all,
I'm Rebecca - this'll be my eighth burn ;) Can't wait - i missed last year, so I hunger for that playaaaa!
I play samba (de rio), maracatu, samba reggae, etc. Going to Brazil Camp (Northern CA), then BMan right after....I have a surdo (third), which is my main thang, and I have a repinique and caixa that I dabble in. May be able to bring a couple agogo or tamborim or something from my bateria. I'm excited to play on the playa!
Oh, and I fire spin (poi and staff) too, and I love to spin to musica brasileira!! -
-
Re: WoW! Introductions are in order...

Re: WoW! Introductions are in order...
Sun, July 10, 2005 - 10:22 PMHi, guess it might be fun to check in here too. Name is Kara. Live in Santa Cruz. 2005 will be my 6th burn, all of which I've been in the Fire Conclave. Been dancing samba for 4 years. Last year was a major part of the theme camp, Sunset Samba Circus. We're taking a break from bringing the stage this year but will have our Brazilian rhythms in the Conclave. I perform in Santa Cruz with Hipnautica dance troupe; samba, hip-hop, funk, african inspired. We usually perform with one of two drum groups, Suco or Goddess of Funk (all women).
We tried to get a lot of draw at Sunset Samba Circus but didn't get as many folks as we'd liked. I know not everyone reads the guide. But you can be sure that Santa Cruz will represent in the Brazilian drum and dance arena again this year. -

Re: WoW! Introductions are in order...
Mon, July 11, 2005 - 10:18 AMare you part of the group that performs before the man burns and then drums right after?
we'd love to have you stop by!
i think samba and the spirit of the music is all inclusive and would like to share it all around... by teaching people some basic moves it'll allow them dive into the music even more...
i ran across sunset samba ( i think its them ) a few years ago but never heard anything happening until the night of the burn, and then it was watching a performance... i felt a little distanced by it... do you play at other times? -

Re: WoW! Introductions are in order...
Wed, July 13, 2005 - 11:33 PMStill on the fence about b-man I am recovering from knee surgery, but have been learning / playing Afrocalypsosambafunk with Samba do Mar in Monterey for a year or 2. If I go I'll bring some fun hand drums - Djembe and Timbal as well as bell, shaker etc...
Been burning for 4 years now and usually am nomadic camping at the fringe of walk in at like 3 or so, like that side and the open space.

Re: WoW! Introductions are in order...
Thu, July 14, 2005 - 9:26 AM~M
Thanks for the healing wishes, I hope things look up as well... The Samba do Mar in Monterey is a small group, there may be a bigger group in SF. Our crew plays with Kevin from SambaDa. They played a few #s in SF at Carnival this year on the stage. A relatively new group also goes by Sambahamians and Samba-a-go-go. We have an identity thing going on... we had a few members on th eplaya last year doing a little playing with Santa Cruz folks.

Re: WoW! Introductions are in order...
Fri, August 26, 2005 - 7:29 PMName's Sam...
I'm a little late on the Uptake here sorry!
Will be camping with a crew who do some Brazilian, and Brazilian-inspired, rhythms on surdo/snare/repique/bell. Last year during the burn we were doing the (our) Maracatu with about 12 drummers...
Oakland-based, members of Quimbanda and Fogo Na Roupa are involved.
Don't know our site yet, but we usually head out to the playa to play. Look for us as the 'Loyeds' on the main info bulletin board, or in the computer. I will be looking for the flag, hope to meet you all out on the playa, and jam with some new people!
