Hi everybody.
It is my dream to be part of a Samba drumming group. I am here in Salvador, Brazil now and would like to learn more. I live in the historical center and the other day walked by this group of guys dressed up in ridiculous costumes having the time of their lives just banging away... I was laughing with pure joy, there really is nothing like that sound, damn!
I have no experience as a drummer, but everybody I know has always questioned this; it's in my blood. Any suggestions? I don't need to be part of this year's carnival, I just want to find a group that would throw me a drum and be willing to grant me a small part in their thing. I love it!
Obrigado
jp
I must've run into you guys the night of the burn, I ran into SOMETHING special (tough to recall...I ran into a lot, heh). If this works out here I'd love to be part of that. OK thanks for the advice

Re: seeking drum group in salvador
Sun, January 16, 2005 - 6:00 PMhey, can anyone help john paul?
if you ran into a bateria the night of the burn just after the crowds dispersed, i think was a group from santa cruz... they only perform inside the circle with the fire conclave and then play right after...
BUT - i found a brazilian drummer playing just near me as i danced and he was fantastic! no connection to the larger group a few feet away... -

Wed, January 19, 2005 - 1:56 PMtou da bain! i don't know how close you are to sao paulo, but there are sacred drummers associated with the templo guaracy who would be happy to point you in the right direction to learn drumming there. good luck with that...and let us know how it goes! -

As far as the Santa Cruz Sambaistas, they are called Suco and they may or may not have a site at sucolive.net (maybe add www?)
JP, check out OLodum's HQ!!!! They can at least point you somewhere ... nao?

Re: seeking drum group in salvador
Wed, January 26, 2005 - 4:10 PMJP, what I meant was, although Olodum would not likely invite you to play for Carnaval, they may have classes or at least know some teachers. They are a cultural group (and a non-profit as I understand it) as well as a performance group.

Yeah, there may well be more than one (or ... mas que nada ... ha) SC-based bateria, though I am not sure of more than one that played at the Burn this year. I was playing one of the big-ass taiko drums (on a stand) during the Burn, and Suco, the SC bateria I mentioned, were near me -- about 7-8 o'clock. I think they knew the (fire)dancers near them/us, yeah, and they did their own thing once the performance hit "freestyle" time. (can't recall if they had samba dancers/firedancers in dual roles or not). At that point I matched what they were playing, kind of a surdo-beat-via-taiko thing --it's all bass, right? -- boa divertismo!
Sucolive.net at least gave me an email address when I tried it a few months ago -- not sure how else to get in touch. Google "Santa Cruz samba" and you get results for other groups, can't recall the names -- SambaDa is a well-known one.
