      hey johnny!

i looked at your profile... amazing drumming pics!

need to get more info for you on what type of drums make up a bateria...

groups to listen to are: Olodum, Timbalada, and my favorite Ile Aiye (although their albums are hard to come by)

The beat is called Samba-Reggae and originates from Bahia in Brazil...

Are you in Mass. now? I'm located in San Francisco...

ok... i researched a bit for a few links for you...

        www.littlephil.free-online.co.uk/b...tm

        www.brazilianpercussion.com/english

        that should answer some questions...

Holy crap there's a lot of instruments at brazillianpercussion.com! It's so cool that you can listen to the sounds they make. The other site looks like a great learning resource. Thanks!!

I've got a couple djembes. I might be in the market for more drums soon, like conga-style drums.

How do drums fare on the playa?

hmmm. i don't know the tech aspects of what dust will do to your drums....

as far as what is needed... i talked to my teacher last night and she said what we need MINIMUM is:

            -sordu (bass)
-panderio (high lead)... or something similar... will lift the name from the site shortly... djembes will be good too!
            -bell and / or shakere

those three elements will give a good start..

              update on that previous post:

              pandeiro, repiniques (the lead), malacachetas

Hey ~M and Johnny, glad to see the thread starting. I'd add an agogo to your list for that Filhos de Gandhi sound (you can hear on Marageth Menezes and Daniela Mercury albums).

I've heard people use djembes as a surdo, but instead of playing by hand, they use a soft mallet to get a deeper resonant sound.

I have a pandeiro, agogo, and a tambourin (more rio sound, but it can be adapted). I saw several people playing pandeiro last year walking around the playa.

yes... i guess i meant an agogo when i said 'bell'...

for those SF drummers... here is a link to a local company recommended by Gamo da Paz (master drummer and all around nice guy!)

do you have a camp location or are you even thinking of having a camp at BM?

hey... i'm not sure of the location yet... but this particular camp (Groove?) is hosting many different classes.

they are bringing a vinyl dance floor out there!

i'll get more details as they happen. we will be on the Burning Man schedule of events that you get at the gate...

I am well versed in the differnet parts of Samba. What parts are you in most need of? I teach medatitative percussion in SLO county. Samba is dear to me.

      Hey Steve,

At this point we need it ALL ... but who doesn't want it all? :)

      Could you lead?

I could probably part out a Samba, not too complex for novices and the well mind altered to be there with it. It's important that the groove be well laid down and I would be more interested in that role for encouraging extended play.

          sounds great!...

i'm hoping some drummers will show up for class and it will evolve organically...proving to be tricky to do so beforehand...

          what drums do you have?
          • Re: Looking for Drummers...

            Tue, July 20, 2004 - 2:55 PM
I will try to bring a small surdo, as I need something bassy anyway, for drumming in the pre-Burn group aka the Drum Consortium.

I also have a pandeiro and maybe maybe maybe (com sorte) a berimbau -- we can do that Olodum tune "O Berimbau" perhaps? There will likely be berimbaus on the playa regardless.

I play samba-reggae, sambao (samba duro), samba de roda, maracatu, coco de roda/forro, afro, maculele, timbalada, baiao, and lots of other stuff with my Capoeira group. I should be able to help with all this. 2 surdos would be best. A tamborim or two might be nice too. Xocalho/shaker for sure, nao? (never heard agogo in samba-reggae but that's me...)

              Tue, July 20, 2004 - 3:55 PM
the agogo was my teacher's idea... a shaker and tamborim would be heavenly...

welcome! i can't wait to hear your music! this is going to be fantastic....

i'm still waiting to get details on where the Groov Camp will be as they wait to hear back from the ORG...

                "O Berimbau"

                love that song...

Well OK I don;t know ALL the words but I think I can get 'em ...

" ... Eu sou Olodum, quem tu e? .... Vem meu amor, Olodum, nessa alegria ... Vem meu amor, deixa fluir ... nessa arte ...
(my fave part) .... cantando reggae, cantando jazz, cantando blue-woo-woo-woo-s ..."

Yeah I'll get the lyrics ;P

what about Madagascar Olodum and Revolta Olodum ... Retirante ruralista ... Lavrador ... Nordestino Lampiao ... Salvador ...

OK getting a lil bit excited here ....

i'm a drum teacher trying to get to BM for my first time this year. i've got a couple djembes (big ones, remo paolo mattolis that aren't afraid of alkalai lake beds; one with a shoulder strap even!) and can certainly play the rhythms so long as i take a look at the links or follow someone's lead. i'm in the south bay area.

      welcome damien,

anybody have a link or two for him to check out...?
      • Re: Looking for Drummers...

        Thu, July 22, 2004 - 1:16 PM
        no links, I wish though...

maybe search online for mp3s of (eg) samba-reggae, samba duro, timbalada (I mention others in post above) ...

if you are a drum teacher you will likely be able to pick it up quickly enough. Wow I haven't had a lot of experience teaching/facilitating but I will try ... I do know pretty much all the parts we'd need, mas o menos (more or less), and can try to solidify what I do know in the next couple weeks before my pre-Burn road trip ... hoping I can get a surdo, at least...

if i can hear it i can always write it down later or just play it enough to burn it in to memory. i'll see what i can find as well. i can always browse the books at the music store ;)

I was referred to you by someone going to Burning Man.

I started drumming 20 years ago in 7th grade, love it, but never got real good at it.

I'm not the experienced drummer you're looking for, but if I can hang out, enjoy - awesome.
If I can learn - even better.
If I can fill in and contribute - that would be great.

I partied with Mangueira in Brasil for Millenium New Year's. I love Brazilian rhythms, Samba, et al.

I don't have a drum, but I'd love to meet up with you all at Burning Man.

If I can get 'em there, I have two surdos. I'll see what I can do. Where is Groove camp going to be?

      Hey guys!

I'm getting the details on Groov Camp's location. They aren't mapped under that name so I've emailed them directly...
      • Re: Looking for Drummers...

        Tue, August 3, 2004 - 11:48 AM
Taj -- that would be great if you can bring 2 surdos b/c it looks like I can't pack anything of the sort. I will be able to bring a half-decent agogo (african style but...) and a pandeiro and a berimbau. Sadly that may be all I can do, I want a surdo but we don't even have a car for our pre-Burn road trip yet!

        Will be in touch ...

hey laszlo... this thread will kick into gear as we get closer to Burning Man in August...

my plans are to bring out a linoleum floor (like the one from Groov Camp) and have a Sunset Samba in the evenings... it'll be fun to dance and drum as the air gets cooler...

    Hi ~M

I am bringing a couple of agogo, pandeiros, atleast one tamborim and possibly a repinique and a caixa. I also know somebody bringing up a tamtam which im sure she will let me borrow. I play mostly Rio samba school style but have played Samaba-Reggae.

wow! if only i had a projector... i'm bleeding money here so its not a possibility, BUT if you know anyone with one we can put a white sheet over my RV and use it for a screen (hoping that would be enough)...

and yes... please stop by with drums. i've got a lot of cds but nothing gets a dancer going like live music!
